Inspiration - Girl Power!
I just started a summer art history class, 'Women and Art: Medieval through the 19th Century'. Wow, has art history changed since I last took a class! These are all paintings by women I had never heard of before today... above is a self-portrait by Hildegard of Bingen, a nun who had visions, wrote books and painted, she was the 10th child in her family and given to the church as a child...
... this is a self portrait by Angelika Kauffman, a Swiss-Austrian woman who spent much of her life in Italy where she was quite famous in her day...
...and this one, my favorite, by Suzanne Valadon, who grew up in Montmartre in Paris. She was a model for Renoir, Degas, and Toulouse-Lautrec, posing and learning painting techniques from them. Their life stories are all fascinating, as is their art.
But why are there no art history books for kids about these amazing women??
Happy New Year to you, dear readers. How was your 2012?
Mine was really pretty good, now that I look back on it. Highlights:
- Had 2 exhibits of my work.
-Hosted an art sale in our garden. We had so much fun, it may become an annual event.
-Set up a family etsy shop. We actually sold a few things, too.
-Made more money from my artwork than ever before!
-Finished grad school: I now have 5 picture book biographies I am excited to send out into the world in 2013.
-Helped our boy finish high school and go off to college. Sent him across the country. He thrived. We survived.
-Celebrated our daughter's 21st birthday, and watched her grow into an amazing filmmaker.
-Moved into a beautiful new art studio where I teach. Trying to remember where we've put everything.
-Saw lots of art at galleries, Art Murmur, museums.
-Traveled: New York, Rhode Island, Oregon, Cazadero, Half Moon Bay, the Sierras of California.
-Turned 50! Celebrated with friends near and far.
Not a bad place to work, right? After teaching for 29 years, it is going to take some time to get used to this being my office. It's quiet. And it's all on me to make it happen here. However, it's really fun, too!
There's lots of art making going on here right now. I am working on my mailing list as well, planning to send out monthly messages about what I'm up to in the studio, workshops I'm teaching, my art sales, online shops, etc. If you would like to get these updates, write your email address in the comments below. (I will delete it quickly, I promise!) A new print just went up for sale in my Etsy shop, click on the link below: Pomegranate print This week I am the featured artist, showing my sketchbooks on : My Giant Strawberry Take a look! I am really having fun on Instagram, follow me here: Ihttps://www.instagram.com/kierendutcher/
And in time for all the protests this weekend, I still have a few of these left:
Let me know if you want one. Have a great last week…
